noun: the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth,                                                  or usefulness of something

Also, one’s judgement of what is important in life.

I recently went on a trip.  To a city I love.  It’s a walking city, a village feel.  The food was fabulous.  The architecture amazing.  The people were friendly.  And the shopping was outstanding.  But my favorite part of the long weekend, was the culture.

The first night my younger son and I sat outside at a sidewalk cafe eating simple food that was absolutely delicious.  It took a moment to realize that the music we were listening to was live; played by musicians that were just on the steps of the library across the street.  A large crowd had gathered in appreciation.  It was sublime.

The next night both my sons, young adults, and I walked a few blocks to another fabulous dinner.  On the stroll back there was a grand piano in the middle of the square!  A man had pulled it there with his bicycle and was playing for whoever would listen.  We sat and joined the hundred plus crowd in admiration.  It was beautiful and intense music and the diverse group were mesmerized by it.  There were young lovers laying in their beloveds lap, gays holding hands, older couples looking longingly into each others eyes, even police on bicycles stopped for a song or two.  And me and my boys.  Them indulging me in the beauty of the moment.

When it was time to go I put some money in his jar and quietly said to him, “I value you. Keep doing what you’re doing.” He looked me in the eye and replied, “I appreciate that”.  I kind of like that about myself…knowing what I value.  And when to value it.

“Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.”

Albert Einstein

What do you value? Be in the moment, there is so much to value…Happy Friday!
